A Rare and Unprecedented Opportunity
John G. Johnson

My place of employment recently promoted me. Obviously, this meant that my current position was open for someone else to occupy. The “human resources” department finally hired someone whom they thought would be perfect to fill my shoes, so to speak.

I work for a small firm and the HR department, consisting of just two people, normally does the recruiting and training. They [HR department] somehow found themselves unable to train this new employee. So their quick solution was to throw the person into my lap. Now, others would have said,” Hell no! This ‘ain’t my responsibility!” But being the person I am, I detest seeing innocent people being taken advantage of, being hung out to dry for no fault of their own. So I took on the task of training this new employee. And to tell you the truth I did not mind either. I like teaching.

The interesting thing though, they [human resource] said the normal training time is approximately four weeks. My original training time was even longer (six weeks) because of the antiquated computer system they had in place at that time, coupled with the fact that they went through several trainers. No, no, I did not scare them away. The company was going through some, let’s just say, “interesting times.”

Anyway, before I sat with the new employee (we’ll call her Sarah) I said to myself, “how can I make this training fun?” The answer I came up with was “to cut the learning curve.” Now how was I to do that?

When I sat with Sarah we immediately engaged in fluff talk. However the fluff talk was just a cloak, concealing my true intent. What I was really doing was: establishing rapport, setting the frame that this training was going to be fun, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY - I was installing reframe perspectives.

It was simple to set the frame that training was going to be fun. I asked Sarah what her favorite movie was. She said Star Wars. I responded with, “well, Master Yoda, I am. And a potential Jedi warrior you desire to be, do you not?” She laughs and responds with an affirmative “yes.” Now Sarah’s laughing is important. Because, when you laugh, a lot of good “learning chemicals” are released (Have fun when you are learning).

When it came to installing reframing perspectives I said to Sarah, “mistakes are going to occur. It’s a part of learning. However, look at your so-called mistakes as - a rare and unprecedented opportunity to learn. And you really want to learn, no? Sarah’s eyes lit up. And she says, “wow, I never looked at learning and mistakes that way. I am ready.”

Now, using a variation of part of an induction Milton Erickson often used, I further went on by saying in a casual and conversational manner, “it’s just like when you were in grade school and you were learning letters and numbers. A ‘b’ sometimes looked like a ‘d’, a ‘p’ sometimes may have looked like a ‘9’, a ‘7’ could have resembled a capital ‘L’. Hey, back then, because - you are relaxed, you are taking your time, and you have a good attitude, you are excited to learn – you finally learned the difference between them all. And here you are. So it’s ok, right?”

During the course of our training I found ways to get Sarah to laugh. Also, whenever Sarah made mistakes she always smiled and uttered, “this is a rare and unprecedented opportunity for me to learn!”

Now get this. It took Sarah – two weeks to learn what she had to. HR standard time was four weeks. Human Resources said that Sarah was smart and a quick learner. Could that have been the case? Was HR right, or was Sarah’s quick learning a result of how her and I interacted? I said nothing and went about my way, silently into my new promotion.

And would you believe fate intervened again? I had to train another person for a similar position. I asked HR what the training time was. I applied the same techniques I used with Sarah. And again I got similar results. And again HR said that they are hiring quick learners. HR didn’t even bother to ask how I was training them.

Well, you know what? Two out of two is enough for my convincer strategy; two out of two is more than proof that I had an effect.

To recap: Make learning fun; Make sure humor, good feelings, and good” learning chemicals” are attached/associated to what you are learning; MOST IMPORTANTLY - reframe any mistakes that you or someone else make as - a rare and unprecedented opportunity to learn! Hey, if you already have learned something good and it felt wonderful to learn, it’s wholeheartedly yours to keep.

Olympics Gold Mind Award

The Olympics is one place where the average person can see PERSUASION101 put to an ultimate rewarding test. As a Senior Olympic Figure Skating Champion for the USA sixteen years ago, I pay close attention to the body language and inner communications displayed on TV from our US Olympic Team. Although many see a Sports Psychologist to help them deal with the press, pressure of competition, etc., it is still up to the skater to win. The Psychologist is just another tool in their bag of tricks.

Without naming the solo male skater involved, one particular Olympic year stands out for me. This figure skater taught the whole world a lesson without realizing he was telling us his inner most desires as well as why he had a catastrophic triple axle in the opening moments of his program. As he came off the ice and into the puzzled look of his coaches question, "What happened?" You heard him say, "The last thing I remember was thinking about how I lost last time when I fell on my axle and how hard we had worked to insure I didn't make that same mistake."

Now why would I say "he was telling us his inner most desires?" He had yet to learn that at the other than conscious level there lives an Obedient Servant who makes literal truth out of whatever you say or think as a direct command of action about you. Even though your heart and soul came into your body for the preservation of who you are, it processes all thought and listens for the command of action contained therein. Then produces the equal energy of attraction to create the manifestation.

This obedient servant does not recognize "do" or "don't" and "yes" or "no." It just looks for the command of action like "Don't spill the milk" and goes for it. Although we see such responses in our children, we fail to understand as adults that we are still acting out our desires from an other than conscious level.

Could it be that thinking about the last triple axle that landed his butt on the ice and the medal around someone else's neck had produced the same response again? What was that last thought that he had prior to the take off on the jump? His previous fall and how he did it? It wasn't perfection! If he is on his butt in your mind's eye, you have learned this lesson well.

Just imagine . . . an Obedient Servant who makes literal truth out of whatever you think as a direct command of action about you. Something to ponder as you consider the implications in your future and your responses in the past. In fact, I was just wondering what would happen if we all realized that we are only limited by our imaginations?

I do know that he went on four years later to become a Gold Medalist after he also learned that "You never get enough of what you don't want." As long as your focus is on what you "don't want" you are, at the other than conscious level asking the heart and soul of who you are to create the energy of attraction that will manifest just that.

Oh how complicated and yet simple we are to operate. Even healing in mind, body and spirit is something you can do in a weekend with a Life Clean Out and Cyberphysiology training.

Until we meet again . . . be persuaded . . . that you ARE able . . . that's right.
